A registered 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization based in West Virginia and is not affiliated with any other organization having the same or similar name. Almost Heaven serves WV, VA, MD, and areas of PA. accepting senior or "special needs" Goldens from shelters, owner give-ups, and other rescues and is a refuge for those Golden Retrievers who otherwise may be labeled "hard to adopt" or "unadoptable" by ordinary standards. Some of our Sanctuary Goldens are only with us until they become well enough to be adopted, or until that "special" home is found. Others will receive love and care here at the Sanctuary for the rest of their lives.

Ralph E. (Skip) Free May 22, 1951 - January 15, 2012 Skip was co-founder of Almost Heaven and dedicated a large portion of his life to helping and rescuing animals. Skip was a gentle, compassionate, dedicated man who gave up many personal comforts (including vacations) to help those dogs (animals) who needed him most. Skip leaves behind AHGRR's cofounder and wife, Carol Free. Almost Heaven will continue to save those animals who need us. It was Skip's request, and last wish that the rescue continue it's work in his memory - and in his honor. It is a legacy that will be fulfilled. Donations in Skip's memory will be used for the comfort and care of the orphan dogs in the care of Almost Heaven. Thank you, everyone for your kind thoughts and prayers. This is a very difficult time - but Skip's spirit will see us all through ~ Carol

Chipin Fundraising Events      Help with Extraordinary Vet Expenses Buffy came to us intact - and heartworm positive. Her bills to date (and yes, we did find immiticide) are over $800 Haley arrived with chronically infected ears. Our vet has referred us to a specialist. Our costs to save her life and stop her pain will be in excess of $4.400 Doji, a 4 - 5 year old female, came to us with a dislocated hip and a torn ACL in her other rear leg. The ACL surgery, spay, vaccinations have topped $1,000 so far Poor Job was the most pathetic looking dog I think we've ever seen. It appeared he was shot at close range with a shotgun. Despite what Job has gone through - he is a sweet, gentle, loving dog. His vet bills have topped $700 so far and we still need to have his neuter and regular vetting completed. Amy, a yellow labbie girl whose owner couldn't keep her or her 10 year old golden boy. Amy is diabetic and mostly blind. Her monthly medical needs are unpredictable due to the nature of diabetes - so a monthly sponsorship of $100 would be a big help. Max has been with us for quite a while after the organization who rescued him from a life inside a crate couldn't find an appropriate home for him. Max has developed perioccular dermatitis (we think) and is currently undergoing treatment and further evaluation and testing. Costs may easily exceed $500 Casey was found starved and limping after having been hit by a car. Casey's healed from the injury but has a terrible condition of the skin and hair. It is currently being evaluated. Total costs are expected to top $700. Ollie was found tangled in wire at an abandoned barn. He was almost starved - and mostly blind. We are currently running tests on Ollie to find out what is causing his blindness - and his excessive thirst and urination issues. Expected costs - $500 Quazi's just underwent life saving surgery for a huge oral tumor - His owners dumped him when he needed them the most. Cost - $2,500 Sophie came to us as a 6 month old pup. Her mother must have rolled or tred on her as she has a dislocated hip - and a missing shoulder blade. Her pelvis has numerous healed fractures. We need to seek specialized orthopedic care for her and expect the cost to be $3,000 - $4,000 Additionally, many times Almost Heaven needs to pull a dog from a high kill shelter and temporarily board it at a vet hospital in order to save that dog's life. We find ourselves boarding those dogs - sometimes for several weeks - while we arrange transport to the sanctuary. 60% of the shelter dogs we helped last year benefited from our ability to find them a temporary haven. Almost Heaven really needs to have a funding source available to pay those bills as they come due. All donations are greatly appreciated.      Chipin Towards a New Boarding Kennel in Honor of Tucker This is Tucker, who passed away December 30, 2011. To honor him his owners are supporting the construction of a second boarding kennel building at Almost Heaven. This will not only provide quality boarding care for many dogs, but will help to support Almost Heaven in the future. What better way to honor Tucker, or your own forever dog?
